Pacific National trains run on a repeating weekly timetable with crews stationed across 15 depots. In order for the Pacific National team to build these weekly crew rosters it took expert planners 30 man days to complete every timetable.
Pacific National required a more efficient way to build the 30 day crew movement plans and rosters. The crewing problem that Pacific National faced involved many complex and demanding business rules and regulation of which needed to be considered for each crew member. They needed a way to encapsulate all of these workforce rules while significantly reducing the crew rostering workload.
